Web hosting provider Network Solutions was considered by industry experts to possibly be participating in “front-running” where a registrar registers the domain name after a customer searches for it. This prevents the customer from registering the domain name with another hosting company so the registrar can then sell the name for a higher price. Network Solutions denied they were front-running and said they were registering names to combat external threats of front-running. By the end of the week, the company is reconsidering their controversial policy.
There were also several major acquisitions this week. Indian web host Real Value Hosting acquired Vision Online Network, a Canadian hosting provider and promises no interruption of services with unchanged pricing and products. Through this growth strategy, Real Value hopes to have a significant impact on the Indian market.
Fat Jack Hosting acquired proxy hosting provider Host My Proxies to ensure proxies are available with the same level of reliability and support as mainstream hosting situations.
Digital Realty Trust acquired Foxboro Business park in suburban London. With three units, the building will consist of two facilities leased out for data center spas and a third unit that will be turned into data space.
Several web hosting providers are upgrading their currently facilities, including SoftLayer, InteleNet Communications and Swsoft.
Though its been a hectic week in web hosting news, Network Solutions is the story that is most likely to have an ongoing impact as everyone watches to see what revised policies will be presented in light of the purported front-running.
